Activities

The purpose of our program is to provide meaningful activities for a wide range of individuals from different age groups and all walks of life. For an activity to be meaningful it must meet several criteria. It must have a purpose, it must be voluntary, it must be pleasant to the participant, it must be socially appropriate, and it must offer the person a reasonable chance of success.

Every activity we offer our residents must have a purpose that is obvious. No matter how silly or frivolous it may seem on the surface, there is a reason for everything we do. It may be that the activity just feels good, or it may be as involved as raising money for a dinner and show in Branson, but it must be obvious and acceptable to everyone involved.

All activities must be voluntary. Even though getting the individual motivated may require a lot of encouragement, explanation and modeling, the person must come to the activity willingly. There is no meaning in activities that are forced on a person.

Our activities support a sense of well being. Many of our residents live mostly or entirely in the here and now. therefore, we do not believe in pain for future gain. If for any reason an activity is not a positive experience, we will not continue it.

Our activities are consistent with the person's social status. We strive to maintain autonomy and self esteem in all our interactions, and consider each resident's comfort zone. We prefer the term "person-appropriate" activity rather than "age appropriate". Our activities are failure proof. Our objective is a positive, affirming experience for participants, that will be a success.

There has been some research conducted that evaluated the effectiveness of activity programs in terms of specific indicators. These include reducing incidence of aggressive behavior, reducing the amount of psychotropic drugs used, increase of verbalization and positive interactions with peers and staff. The best measure of a programs success, however, is still the moment by moment, here and now reaction of each participant. Wherever the person is, whatever he or she is doing, we are attentive to his/her level of comfort, satisfaction and pleasure. The one underling aim of our activity program is achieving a genuine sense of well-being for all our residents.
